An urban settlement of such dimensions and relevance needed defensive structures and infrastructures to meet the primary needs of the community, such as water supply and control.
During the 2018 archaeological intervention, co-financed by National Geographic and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, a water channelling and decanting system was discovered next to the fortification.
This is a canalization system built in the initial moments of occupation of La Bastida. The deposits that run along the slope would allow the water decanting.
However, the narrow channel of more than 2 meters deep, carved in the rock, is still a mystery to reveal.
In the following centuries, a huge water reservoir was built on the southeastern lower slope, in the “Piedemonte” sector, closed by a large containment dam.
Even with the bulk of Cabezo Gordo to the north, the water reservoir is not dwarfed. It had a capacity of about 320,000 liters of water, something unusual at that time.
This is the current appearance of the water reservoir after the restoration works. The waterproofing yellow marls no longer cover its surface. Now this water storage structure counts with a drainage system strategically located to show its majesty.
