THE Troya OF THE WEST

 

In 2012 we found a stone fortification system unparalleled in continental Europe of its time. The fortification system consists of two walls separated by a few meters, which could initially have reached 6 meters in height. A monumental construction, accompanied by a canalization and a water collection system, implied a huge work investment. When were such works carried out?

Line 1 starts from a very close point to the Salado ravine and runs perpendicular to its course. We followed it in a section of about 45 m up the slope, saving a drop close to 40% at times. The construction closes the only relatively comfortable access route to the hill, coming from the north. Assuming that it continues to ascend until it circles the summit of La Bastida, its length would be around 300 m.

Attached to the outer face of the wall of Line 1, there are five solid quadrangular towers between 3 and 4 m wide, quite close to each other. The preserved height is close to 3 m at some points.

If 4000 years ago we had stood in front of its doors, as we intend to recreate with this 3D modelling, the majesty of the entrance would have shaken us. Yet, even today, in front of the remains of that monstrous fortress, it is difficult to remain indifferent.

The recent restoration and archaeological works carried out by the “Bastida Project” not only ensure the conservation of this invaluable heritage. These also deepened the knowledge of its construction system, which was inaugurated at the dawn of La Bastida, when the houses were nothing but small huts with raised mud and plant skeletons.
